Artist Brenda Drake

My paintings are a continuing exploration of two opposing elements: formality and fantasy. They are teleologically related to elements of ancient, eastern art combining the formal constraints of abstract painting and the organic chaos of flora and fauna. It is nature altering the rhythm of the Man's mathematical universe. Color serves as the link between the opposing forces, unifying reason and mystery. Lyric color is achieved by layering semitransparent washes of paint; and like pearls, each new layer of nacreous surface contributes to its luster and depth. Delicacy with a subtle underpinning of strength: an essentially feminine archetype. Though my work I create my own universe which often contains magical, mythological and dreamlike references. I invite my viewers into this world where they can create their own narrative.
